Details
This is a 6 foot long section of 4 inch I-Beam S4 x 7.7 which is a 4″ tall I beam. ASTM A36 grade material (see graphics for sizes and material properties). A36 grade material is an intermediate tensile strength carbon steel. Used for simple conveyor tracks and push trolley systems with chain hoists. When used with Webb 1,500 pound beam trolley model 10711 the maximum load is 1,500 pounds. Weight of the beam is 7.7 pounds per foot. This track also suits the Ultimation 1,000 pound I-beam trolley which you can order here. This beam section is ready to mount and can be located in place with welded or clamped attaching systems. Use Ultimation steel I-beam sections with Jervis Webb hand push I-beam conveyor trolleys to create simple conveyor systems. You can order the Webb 10711 1,500 pound I-beam trolley by clicking on this link.
4 Inch I-Beam S4 x 7.7# dimensions and finish
See the attached graphic for dimensions, material properties and chemical properties. This S4 x 7.7 I-beam is 4.00″ tall. The flange is 2.66″ wide. The Web is 0.19″ thick at the thinnest point. Contact Ultimation on 586-771-1881 if you need assistance in configuration or ordering. These beams are supplied unpainted.
Conveyor Track applications of 4 inch I-beams
This ASTM A36 grade structural steel is ideal for low volume manufacturing applications. For high volume production line systems, we recommend higher carbon Jervis Webb conveyor track. The higher carbon steel will resist any wear on the flanges even after millions of trolleys pass along it. Learn more about ASTM A36 steel directly from ASTM by clicking on this link.
Installation and safety considerations
Many authorities require all overhead steel installation to be designed and approved by a Registered Profession Engineer. Consult an engineer for assistance with your particular application. When used with Jervis Webb trolley # 10711, this S34 x 7.7# beam can support a weight of 1,500 pounds when supported at 8 foot centers. When using longer spans, be sure to support the beam or track at closer centers or reduce the load. These beams can be clamped or welded in place as required.
What kind of steel beam is an I beam trolley designed for?
I-beam trolley conveyor components are designed to run on I beam track with tapered flanges (please see cross section in the graphic). Consequently these are known as “Standard I Beams” and generally have the prefix S (e.g. S6 or S-6 for a 6″ American Standard I beam). While Wide Flange or H beams have a wider flange and generally have the prefix WF (e.g. WF6). Therefore this wider flange may impact the fit of the product. See dimension “A” in the graphic and if using a wide flange or H style beam ensure this dimension is maintained. Since you should check this dimension, here is a link to the dimensions for standard S type I-beams.
How to measure an I-beam correctly. It’s the height, not the width!
It’s one of the most common errors that we see. Customers measure across the flange of their beam and order a beam trolley to suit. This is not the way to measure an I beam (or any type of steel beam). I-beams and wide-flange beams are designated by the height of the beam, not the width across the flange. See the graphic below for the dimensions of a 4″ I-beam (S4 I-beam):
How do I make my I-beam trolley suit a wider flange beam?
If the I-beam trolley you ordered doesn’t fit your beam, you are welcome to return it to us and purchase a larger model. Alternatively, you can use spacers (washers or steel tube) and longer bolts as required to separate the two halves of your I-beam trolley. Just remember to use Grade 5 or better bolts and that when you extend the I beam trolley halves wider than their originally designed maximum spacing, you will need to de-rate the maximum loading accordingly.

Some notes on shipping costs before you buy
I-beams are big, heavy and expensive to ship! To help reduce shipping cost, Ultimation offers pre-cut beams in various lengths and sizes.
- Beams that are 6′ long and 8′ long can ship with parcel carriers like Fedex and UPS. These can be delivered to virtually every address in the United States. Minimize your shipping costs by getting the size you need
- Beams that are 10′ or 20′ long need to ship with freight services and can only ship to commercial addresses. Just because you run a business from an address does not mean that your address is considered a commercial address by the shipping companies. If in doubt, contact Ultimation at info@ultimation.net or call us on 586-771-1881 and we can quickly check your address. If you order 10′ or 20′ long sections you will have minimum order quantities for the I-beams depending on the size and length. This is because in some cases the shipping cost for a single beam is high than the value of the beam.
- Beams that are 20′ long incur additional charges for shipping due to their oversize length. These fees are reflected in our prices, shipping cost and minimum order quantities for the 20′ long products
