M8 Inductive Proximity Sensor | AE6/AN-3F | DataSensing | Shielded | NPN Output
Inductive proximity sensors are devices commonly used in various automation and industrial applications to detect the presence, or absence, of metallic objects without physical contact. Unlike a device such as a photoeye, which uses light to detect objects, inductive proximity sensors operate based on electromagnetic induction. The proximity sensor generates a high-frequency electromagnetic field around their active sensing area, and when a metal object comes within the detection range of the sensor, breaching the electromagnetic field, it causes a change within the field’s characteristics. The change within the field induces currents in the metal object, which affects the sensor’s electrical properties. When this happens, the sensor detects the alteration and triggers an output signal which indicates the presence of the metal object. The AE6/AN-3F NPN M8 inductive proximity sensor offers short-circuit protection, reverse polarity protection, impulsive overvoltage protection, and protection against inductive loads.

Why use an inductive proximity sensor instead of a photoeye?
Inductive proximity sensors function through electromagnetic induction and are specifically designed to detect metal objects. Photoeyes use light beams to detect the presence (or absence) of objects, which allow them to be used with a much wider range of materials that is not limited to metals. Due to the fact that photoeyes use light beams, this means they can be affected by several different factors such as dust, humidity, ambient light, and more. Inductive proximity sensors are less sensitive to these environmental conditions because they operate based on electromagnetic induction, not light beams. This makes inductive proximity sensors an excellent choice for environments with harsher conditions.
Inductive proximity sensors are commonly used in a wide range of applications and processes, such as:
- Object Detection
- Position Sensing
- Safety
- Material Handling
- Quality Control
