These Type 4 safety lightscreens (commonly referred to as light curtains) are often used within manufacturing and industrial settings to protect personnel from injury and hazards. Lightscreens are also used to safeguard machines and robots from damage; this is commonly referred to as “machine guarding”. Safety lightscreens use photoelectric sensors that create a “barrier” between the receiver and the sender. When the sensors are interrupted, the light curtain sends a signal to stop the connected machine. Unlike a standard photoelectric sensor, a lightscreen can monitor itself through redundant signals, ensuring that it will stop the machine if it encounters an internal fault.
Lightscreen installations are quick and painless thanks to their compact design and the variety of mounting brackets. Due to the non-contact nature of their design, light curtains tend to have a longer service life than their mechanical counterparts such as door switches or other opening/closing devices. Type 4 light curtains provide a shorter response time, as well as a much narrower aperture angle when compared to Type 2 light curtains.
