These Type 4 safety light screens (also known as light curtains) are often installed within industrial settings to protect individuals from injury. On top of offering protection for personnel, safety light screens are also used to safeguard machines and robots from damage and critical errors; this is commonly referred to as “machine guarding”. Light curtains use photoelectric sensors that create a “barrier” between the sender and the receiver. When this barrier breaks and the sensors are interrupted, the light curtain sends a signal to stop the connected machine. Unlike a standard photoelectric sensor, a light screen will monitor itself through redundant signals, ensuring that they will stop the machine if they encounter an internal fault.
Light curtain installations are quick and painless thanks to their compact design and the variety of mounting brackets. Due to the non-contact nature of their design, light curtains tend to have a longer service life than their mechanical counterparts such as door switches or other opening/closing devices. Type 4 light curtains provide a shorter response time, as well as a much narrower aperture angle when compared to Type 2 light curtains.
